Journey to the heart…

As a usual result of a long weekend, me and some of my friends set out on a road trip to Wayanad. The north east district of Kerala greeted us with lots of greenery complimented with fog and rain. Lush green paddy fields, from which Wayanad has derived its name (Vayal meaning paddy fields and Naad meaning village) add to its magnificence.

Among the various attraction this place has, the one we were very keen to see was the heart shaped lake. This lake was located on the highest peak in Wayanad, the Chembra peak (2,100 metres (6,900 ft) above sea level). Chembra is located near the town of Meppady and is 8 km south of Kalpetta. There was an entrance fees of Rs 500 per 10 person trek and Rs 25 per camera, optional guide. Around 2Kms from the entrance point, there was a parking spot for the vehicles, after which the trek starts. The path was majorly through thick bushes, steep slopes and rocks. Since it rained intermittently it had become pretty slippery indeed. View from every point of the trek was priceless. After a tedious climb of 5 kms which took us almost 3 hours, we reached to witness, one of nature’s very own wonders… the heart shaped lake!

Our journey was filled with quiet a few adventures of getting wet in the rain, getting bitten by leaches, tick-bites, spotting a scorpion and series of constant slipping and falling! But in the end, the view and the feel was totally worth every step…
